This itinerary involves a fair amount of walking and limited time at each attraction. However, while a day might feel a bit rushed, it’s still possible to get a taste of Vienna’s rich history, culture, and architecture within this timeframe.
What to see in Vienna in One Day
Vienna State Opera
Built in the 19th century in the Renaissance style, the Vienna State Opera is one of the most important opera theaters globally. It opened in 1869 with a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera, “Don Giovanni.”

St Stephen’s Cathedral
After a short walk, we arrive at Stephansplatz (Saint Stephen Square), where the iconic St. Stephen’s Cathedral is located. This beautiful building has an impressive Gothic tower that stands 137 meters high. If time allows, climb its spiral staircase for amazing views of the city.
It’s possible to visit a small part of the church’s interior free of charge. If you want to see more, you need one or more tickets. Besides the church itself, one can also have a look at the Cathedral Treasure (€5), one of the Church Towers (€6), and the Catacombs (€6).
Mozarthaus
Just a few minutes’ walk from the Cathedral, you’ll find Domgasse street 5. Here, you will discover the house where Mozart lived from 1784 to 1787. If you are a music lover, you will be thrilled to pay a visit.
It was in this house that he composed some of his most famous works, including ‘The Marriage of Figaro.’
Today, Mozarthaus is a museum and exhibition space dedicated to Mozart’s life and musical legacy. Visitors can explore the composer’s apartment, meticulously restored to reflect the living conditions of the late 18th century.

Mozarthaus opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Regular entrance is €14. Children and teenagers up to 19 years old pay €4.50.
Hofburg Imperial Palace
The Hofburg Imperial Palace, originally built in the 13th century, served as the primary residence of the Habsburgs for over six centuries.
Expansions and renovations throughout the years have resulted in a fusion of architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo.
Visiting the entire palace may take half a day, so I recommend selecting specific areas of interest and being mindful of your time.

The lavishly decorated Imperial Apartments offer a glimpse into the opulence of imperial living through their exquisite furniture and personal belongings.
The Sisi Museum inside is dedicated to Empress Elisabeth of Austria, commonly known as Sisi, showcasing personal items such as clothing, accessories, and correspondence.
The Palace also houses a remarkable Silver Collection, the National Library, the Imperial Chapel, and the Spanish Riding School, where they train the famous Lipizzaner horses.
Stroll the Ringstrasse
After visiting the Palace, head to the next street, the Ringstrasse, where you’ll encounter some of the most beautiful buildings in Vienna. These include the Parliament, the Stock Exchange, the Votive Church, the National Theater, and the splendid City Hall.
Strolling down this street may take around one and a half hours, depending on your pace. It’s definitely worthwhile to admire these jewels of Vienna, nestled in the heart of the city.
Vienna City Hall
The City Hall is known as the Rathaus in German. This magnificent Gothic-style building has an impressive 321-meter-tall tower and dates back to the 19th century.
The building is so beautiful that it deserves a visit, so ask for the free guided tours inside. It’s also beautifully lit at night.
The square in front is the Rathausplatz celebrate several outdoor events throughout the year, such as the famous Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market).
In the middle of the square, there is a statue known as the Rathausmann, depicting a knight in full armor holding the banner of Vienna. This iconic statue has become a symbol of the city.
Try the typical Sacher Cake
The Sachertorte is the traditional Austrian chocolate cake. It has two layers of thick chocolate and butter sponge cake. In between them, there’s a thin layer of apricot jam. The whole cake is covered with a dark chocolate glaze, which helps it stay fresh for a long time. People often serve it with a bit of cream on the side.
