To visit this beach is a must once you arrive in Catania. It extends for 18 km from Catania to the Agnone Bagni resort.
The closest beaches to Catania are three, numbered from Spiaggia (Beach in Italian) 1 to Spiaggia 3. The beach becomes nicer away from the port and moving south, with Beach No. 3 being the cleanest of them.
La Playa has golden sand and a shallow seabed that slopes gently. This makes this beach a favorite for families with kids. It’s an ideal place for those who love walking. At the same time, the abundance of clubs nearby offers a vibrant nightlife.
Among its advantages is that it is easily accessible by car, but you can also get there by public transport. Take bus D from Piazza Borsellino and get off at Kennedy Est (3).
During peak seasons, La Playa tends to draw large crowds due to its popularity among local vacationers, resulting in potentially busy conditions.
2. La Riviera dei Ciclopi (in Aci Trezza)
La Riviera dei Ciclopi is a stunning stretch of coastline situated in Aci Trezza, a charming fishing village located 15 km north of Catania. It’s known for the special islands there called the Islands of the Cyclops.
The area is renowned for its rocky shores and crystal-clear waters. What makes it particularly special are the iconic rock formations rising from the sea. According to an ancient legend, these rocks were hurled by the Cyclops, the one-eyed giants of Greek mythology, during a battle with the hero Ulysses.
This is not a sandy beach, but visitors can enjoy wonderful panoramic views of these unique basaltic rock formations known as the Faraglioni.
Aside from its mythological allure, the Cyclops Riviera offers various activities for tourists. They can explore the charming town of Aci Trezza, known for its fishing heritage and delightful seafood restaurants.

Aci Trezza is about a 20-minute drive by car. By bus, take line 534 from Piazza Borsellino.

Along the Cyclops Riviera, south of Aci Trezza, you’ll find the town of Aci Castello. The name comes from its ancient Norman castle dating back to the 11th century, perched high on a large rock, offering an incredible view of the coastline and the Cyclopean islands.
Here, the beach is also made of volcanic rocks. The clear seawater hitting the rough lava rocks near the big castle offers a beautiful contrast between the sparkling water and the rugged black rocks.
The area is perfect for leisurely walks along the waterfront promenade. You can stroll along the shore, admiring the beautiful sea and the amazing rock formations. There are cafes and restaurants where you can try traditional seafood dishes.
Furthermore, the region offers various recreational activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing on the small, rocky beaches. Boat tours are also available for those eager to explore the coastline and get a closer look at the intriguing Cyclopean Isles.
Since Aci Trezza and Aci Castello are very close, visitors usually visit them on the same day. You can do it with the same bus line 534.
4. Fondachello
Fondachello is a lovely coastal spot situated approximately 30 km north of Catania, belonging to the city of Mascali, located between Acireale and Taormina.
The 5 km beach is famous for its dark volcanic sand, a feature typical of the region due to Mount Etna’s proximity, Europe’s most active volcano. The dark sands create a beautiful contrast with the clear, azure waters of the Ionian Sea, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling.
The calm and relatively shallow waters make it perfect for swimming and family-friendly activities. Visitors can also enjoy beach volleyball, leisurely strolls along the shoreline, or simply relax while basking in the Mediterranean sun.
Fondachello Beach is a popular choice for both locals and tourists due to its convenient location and diverse amenities. It offers various facilities such as sunbeds, umbrellas, and beachside cafes, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable day by the sea.
From Catania, you can take the Interbus bus to Taormina, and from there, it’s a 20-minute walk to the beach. Alternatively, you can take a train to Mascali, which leaves you half an hour away from the beach.
5. Mulino (in Acireale)
The beach of Mulino is situated in Acireale. This historic town is 17 km north of Catania and is known for its Baroque architecture and proximity to Mount Etna.
Mulino Beach is located within La Timpa Natural Reserve. It’s a beach where the sea meets the land with small stones mixed with soft sand.
Inside the reserve, visitors can spot the remains of an old mill, which gives the beach its name. The word for “mill” in Italian is “Mulino.” Mills were traditionally used for various purposes, such as grinding grains, processing materials, or generating power.
The sea is very blue and clear, allowing us to see through it. It’s also surrounded by lush greenery. A notable feature is the Miuccio river that flows here. Besides the sea, there’s also freshwater near the salty sea.
To access the beach, there are paths where strong shoes are necessary due to the hard lava rocks. Among these paths, I recommend Scala d’Aci. It starts from Acireale’s center and offers the best views of the scenery.
Acireale can be reached in 20 minutes by train or approximately 35 minutes by car from Catania.
6. San Marco and Fiumefreddo
San Marco and Fiumefreddo are both beautiful beaches in Calatabiano, around 35.2 km from Catania. The water is clear and turquoise with small gray stones, so you can walk without needing special shoes. It’s perfect for everyone – solo travelers, couples, and those who enjoy relaxation or parties.
There are beach clubs, but there’s also a large open area. The beach offers services like bars, umbrellas, showers, and toilets. You can try water activities like riding catamarans or jet skis, and there’s a lifeguard on duty.
Getting there is easy, less than 500 meters from the road. Whether you’re alone or with friends, there’s something for everyone at this beach.
Fiumefreddo, situated nearby, has its own lovely beach. It’s known for its beautiful sands and inviting waters. The name comes from the nearby river that flows into the sea, translating to “cold river.”
